The following courses are taken for credit. They are offered over 4 modules, 7th period, with a break for Academic Fair study. Students may change electives in the spring. For a list of past elective offerings, click here.
Dance - Paige Passavant
This class
will explore various forms of dance from folk dance styles to modern.
The class will have a culminating event that will be presented at
Evening of the Arts this Spring.
Math - Annie Tally
This
period is for those who would like extra help with homework or those
who need or desire to accelerate their pace. It will be conducted as a
regular math period.
Art - Stephen Hayes
Students
will do projects with many types of mixed media including foam, wire,
paint, yarn and hot glue. Students will be given the opportunity to
work at their own pace on pieces of individual interest.
Criminal Psychology -
Jill Sugg
This
course examines the case history of real homicides as well as the
documented patterns of behavior and psychoanalytic theory associated
with the perpetrators. We will cover common traits linked with
sociopaths and connections between early indicators of violent
tendencies and subsequent violent acts, ultimately grappling with the
nature versus nurture debate in terms of causal factors. A field trip
to the jail is likely, and methods of investigation and profiling will
be surveyed. Videotaped interviews with several killers will be studied
and the psychological principals in the readings applied.
History of Rock - Matt Willhelm
This
class will cover the development of rock music from the early 1970s to
the present day. Topics will range from heavy metal to the birth of
hip-hop to the more recent integration of technology into the
production and distribution of music. The class will place an emphasis
on the cultural impact of rock music, and will integrate readings,
active listening, and discussion.
Study Hall - Lori Hilliard
This
class is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays as an added help session for
students who need extra time in their day to complete homework. Study
tips and suggestions are also offered on a regular basis to enhance
test taking skills for students.
Guitar - Greg Glynn
This
class will be focused on "playing by ear." We will learn many basic
rock songs, along with the fundamental skills and chords
necessary to play the guitar.
Fitness - Paige Passavant
This
class consists of circuit training. The nine stations have cardio,
weights and balance/strengthening aspects. We end each class with a
cool-down 10 minute walk around the block.
